The Carve Top Standard has been the poster boy for Suhr guitars since it formed the basis for Mark Knophler’s signature guitar back in 1988. Instantly recognisable it, owns the familial resemblance to Fender’s Stratocaster, but steps well beyond that design, bringing luxury woods and premium workmanship to a bolt-on double cut guitar.
The slim ‘C’ neck on this guitar is easy to play and comfortable in the hand; a handful but never clubby or fat. The even shaping on the back of the neck gives a beautiful counterpoint to the compound radius of the fretboard. Providing a 10” radius for comfortable barring at the 1st fret, the board transitions seamlessly to a flatter and more modern 14” radius by the 22nd fret. This coupled with the super jumbo frets, makes bending sublime and legato runs smooth and effortless (of course!).
A basswood body gives warmth similar to mahogany without the pronounced upper mid snarl or the excessive weight. Basswood is light and extremely even across the frequency spectrum and, in keeping with with the rest of the guitar, eschews commonplace guitar snobbery in favor of a ‘grown up’ audiophile's choice.
The electrics in this guitar provide a huge palette of tones. From the woody single coil in the neck to the rasp and growl of the bridge humbucker, this guitar covers a lot of ground. It can even provide those classic strat ‘in-between’ tones that you would want from a guitar made famous by Mr Knophler.
Made in Janury of 2004 this guitar represents a piece of history as well as being an exquisite instrument. There are signs of use commensurate with the age of this guitar, most noticeably on the lower and upper edges of the body and a hairline lacquer crack in the lower neck pocket. These are all minor cosmetic marks from use and photographs have been provided.
